LJL Intangible to Tangible

This project sounded like a nightmare to me, a nightmare I didn't want to live. But that was until I started this project and it got really interesting the way we played around with different material which we don't usually get to interact with in daily life and the same goes with the equipment and techniques. Creating something intangible with tangible material is where it all started and ended as well.

Creative and Critical Thinking

 PART 1

I had a really thick and sticky kind of hose pipe which made it difficult to cut. I first cut rings with the knife/cutter and then burnt the rings to mold them into different shapes. While burning the rings of the hose pipe I even ended up burning my nails from the tip so I recommend using a pair of tweezers to hold up the plastic pipe above the candle.

Compared to cutting down metal square sections, cutting PVC pipes with the help of the handsaw was easier and quicker. Cutting PVC pipe, it also shredded to pieces and the powder was everywhere.

Metal/Aluminium sheet was very easy to mold into different directions. It could be bent down with pressure of hands or nose piler even. I realized the metal sheet could be easily cut into the desire shape by just applying pressure and bending the sheet down.

I even tried making intangible emotions and texture on a swatch of metal sheet by embossing the nail on the sheet and even by the drilling machine.

As for the Metal wire I created many explorations, maybe because this material was much easy to explore because of its support power and less surface area. I used the drilling machine to braid the wire together and kept switching the power force to create different magnitudes. I hammered the wire to keep the bent intact.

Sunboard was an old material that I've been using since M2M project so I was very well acquainted with its properties.

The Metal Square Sections were the hardest to cut through and they produced a really bad screeching noise when I was cutting it with the hacksaw. I tried half cuts and diagonal cuts to give different perspectives to my pipes.

Nose pliers and hammer are to be used to mold Metal Mesh and also only tailor huge scissors can be used for cutting it.

Last was the Laser cutting. The most important thing was making the layout format for laser cutting on digital platform. We have to be really precise with all the measurements.

PART 2
  • I was really careless with the Metal Mesh and ended up with some cuts on my hands but that's probably just my clumsiness. Gradually I realized I should use Nose Plier and not my hands to bend it for my own safety.

  • The thing I struggled the most with was making the layout of my outcome digitally. I had a hard time understanding how to get the measurements right so after many tried I ended up using a simple form for my laser project. I regret not trying hard because I'm still not clear with the concept. I'm going to try and figure this out later.

  • On the first day I had a breakdown because burning plastic at home within the four walls was really suffocating as we weren't at the campus during the beginning of this project. I couldn't work at all on this project at first. It took me a week or so to get back on track and start working. I realized I work with material the best when I'm at campus. I did my material work in a very limited period of time so I didn't get enough time to perform all the explorations I had in my mind for every material.

PART 3
  • Every tangible thing is capable of showing emotions that are intangible in nature.

  • We should try and take out the best in every material as material has more to it than we realise.

  • Molding the material into a specified emotion and representing the outcome with an emotion made me analyse the characteristics of not only the material but the emotion too.

Concept Note

"HOLDING ONTO THE LAST RAY OF

HOPE"

Even when a person thinks the whole world or even their body has given up on them, what they miss out is the small string. The string that might have the answers to all their questions or the magic they've been looking for. We don't know how big the thing is at the end of the string. It could be trapped or it could be free flying out in the sky just looking for the best opportunity. Maybe its trapped for the person to open and free it up. Giving up could never be an option. The beautiful life we have here, let's not stay trapped within the tangible or intangible things and make the best out of our time.
